Arlington Regional Model UN (ARMUN) is an organization that gives middle and high school age students the opportunity to participate in Model United Nations Conferences, the chance for active participation in local, state, and national government processes and affairs, and involvement in the Civic and Political Life of the Community through Community Service, Advocacy, and Education & Outreach Efforts. ARMUN strives to be much more than simply another Model UN Club that looks good on a college application, but to truly help students develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that will help them be effective members of the world and local community, whatever their chosen occupation, helping to pursue a more positive future for all people.
The ARMUN Clubs are, unlike almost all other clubs in the US (there are a few others, but very few) open to all students and are not affiliated with just one school and group of students. Any student in 5th - 9th grade is eligible for our Middle School Model UN and Civic Engagement Club, whether they attend one of the many private schools or public schools in the region, or whether they are homeschooled. And any student in 9th -12th grade is eligible to participate in our Model UN, Civic Engagement, and UNICEF USA High School Club (for both Clubs membership is by grade, but if students are greatly outside normative age for their grade that may make them ineligible for some conferences and activities). For more information about each of these clubs see their individual club pages on this website.
Typically each club will attend between 3 - 5 major conferences per year, and also possibly 2 - 4 one-day, minimal prep conferences, and participate in at least one significant project related to local or state government, and there will be at least one UNICEF related project (we try to steer away from fundraisers for this), and a couple of local community service opportunities and at least a couple of direct advocacy opportunities, as well as some opportunities to meet and mix with staff from International NGOs, Diplomats, various levels of government and government agencies and academics who have information on topics related to issues we have studied or debated about, and then also a number of opportunities for social get-togethers and team-building fun.
